Buzz Charlton

Once again we met Buzz and his dream team for 10 days in Omay elephant hunting. Unfortunately we were charged by an ele cow that hit my cousin. She didn’t manage to crush him with the rolled trunk so she knelt down and attempted to stab him in the middle of the chest. Luc struggled and gripped the tusk. The tusk got entangled and pierced the strap of his video case, then was deflected by Luc’s passport in his chest pocket. By tilting her head she managed to squash Luc’s chest. Mars medivaced in Harare where he lounged about in the Avenues clinic 8 days for cracked ribs and a lung half deflated. He was perfectly treated and when all the blood in his chest was drained, we flew to lake Cabora bassa in Mozambique for hippo and croc, along with the great Dan Hunsaker eager to bowhunt croc and hippo like me. Buzz solved Luc’ problem, his broken ribs preventing him from shooting, in designing a special rig. Luc used a folding chair onto which was taught a thick plank for soaking up most of the recoil. On day 5 Luc shot a whooper 15 foot + croc and on day 6 a real good hippo. Dan was more picky, it was his 13th safari, but didn’t manage to corner top trophy croc or hippo. I approached hippo at 9 m and croc at 20m but shot placement with the bow and arrow wouldn’t have been good. I bow shot a nice kudu on day 2. Eventually the last day I resorted to the rifle and shot a tremendous hippo bull and a beautiful 14 foot+ croc. Mission fully accomplished.

Not a dull day, plenty of adventures. With trophies aplenty and Buzz teams reckless and playing all the gamut of tricks and even surpassing themselves, there was no risk to fail. Day after day we enjoyed anticipation and endless action. Our numerous approachs kept our hearts pounding. In the camps we had so much fun (verging insanity) with Buzz, Justin, Pete, Dan and Winston, joking and laughing, what was real bad for Luc’s ribs.

This safari was by far the best we have experienced. We’ll remember Buzz and his friends ( Justin, Myles, Charmain, Kirsty, Eddy, Morgan, Crighton) beaming with joy and generosity and we are craving to meet them again for revenge on elephant.
