Jack shot his tuskless on day 2 at +/-25yards, quartering frontal. Bullet went slightly behind the brain, but broke the spin and dropped the elephant. The bullet was not recovered, but the bullet from the ‘coupe de gras’ was recovered intact. It entered the top of the head and was found under the throat. The buffalo was shot quartering on at +/-60 yards. The bullet entered the point of the right shoulder, went through the top of the heart and was found under the skin on the opposite side, 12” behind the left shoulder. The buffalo ran 50 yards before dying. A lot of elephant were seen on the hunt most days, but due to the thick bush plains game and Buffalo sightings were limited. We concentrated on Dagga boys mostly, tracking a few herds to get the best buffalo. We had cold, cloudy weather and bad winds, so were outsmarted by a few groups of dagga boys. We eventually followed a group of 6 bulls that joined a herd, and managed to take a nice old bull.

Overall great hunt. Everyone worked extremely hard. Goal was to get a good dagga boy and a tuskless elephant with an open sighted .470 double. Accomplished elephant on day 2 and buffalo on day 12. Luckily both were one shot kills. Woodleigh solids (handloads) performed perfectly. Persistence by the PH and trackers made for a great safari. - Jack, July 2011 |
