Arrival

Reg and Joe chartered in to Chenje airstrip in Chewore South on the 21st. of July.  That afternoon we settled in to camp (Joes 9th year in a row in that camp) and then went down to mkanga Field station to collect our “spy” and sign in! Joes old mate Mike Katekwe had his nephew as our spy.

Day 2 - 3

lots of driving to try and work out where all the buff were.  Tracks of 4 herds seen but all to old to follow.

Day 4

we found where a big herd of about 300 buff  had crossed the springs road going in to nice open rolling country. We tracked them for 3 hours trying to get in front of them . Which we finally did. We had the whole herd file past us across a dry river bed at about 120 yds. We could not get any closer as there was a herd of ele cows right near the buff.  Reg had tpo wait on the sticks for 20 miniutes while I glassed all the bulls. Some of the big bulls crossed without stopping so I could not get a look at them. Any way right near the tail of the herd a big bodied herd bull ambled into the river bed and stopped in the middle. Reg nailed him with a perferct shoulder shot. Our man “timber snake” got it all on film perfectly. After a 5 minute wait we went over and found him already dead – a lovely 38 inch herd bull!

Day 5

hunted 3 dagga boys near camp. After 6 hours trackeing we nearly nearly got a shot but not quite! A good old bull blew us out at 20 paces. Good fun though! Back to the cruiser!

Day 6

we looked for a herd but found no fresh tracks.  I managed to get the cruiser very wells stuck for 2 hours in the Maura River so we got in to camp at 8 pm eventually.

Day 7

tracks of a huge herd crossed from Dande back in to Chewore. Lions pushed them up out of the Jesse on the Angwa in to the Chivhima Ne Mesu hills which was perfect. We shadowed them for 3 hours with the lions in between us and them. Finally we got ahead of them and had the entire herd feed on to us . There must have been 400+ buff. A magnificent young bull at the front was passed up and then a good mature bull came up on our left. Joe nailed him with his Blaser. It was well close enough  for the “big Merk” but we did not think to change around. The first shot was excellent. The bull soon trailed behind the herd.  We got up to him and Joe frontal brained him at 70 paces with the .470 – very very good shot!

Day 8

down to Tiger Odyssey for some fishing. Reg caught a 7 lbs tiger. Lots of bites but still a bit cold.

Day 9

We spent the entire day in the Mupata Gorge fishing. A beautiful day spent but only one fish caught again by Reg late PM as we drifted down to camp.

Day 10

A rather late charter out of Chapoto but the Reg and Joe made it … Just!!!
